It can be confusing that your bill shows the actual gas consumption in kilowatt hours (kWh) instead of cubic metres (m3), as displayed on the gas meter. However, the value in kWh can be easily calculated by the following formula:
m³ x calorific value x correction factor = kWh
It is important that you carry out the calculation for both the old meter reading and the current meter reading, because the consumption is the result of the difference between the old and the new meter reading and is billed at the unit rate applicable to you.
You don’t know where to find the calorific value or the correction factor? Both values are stated on the last bill of your gas supplier. Alternatively, you can ask your grid operator.

Old meter reading:
8,147 (m3) x 11.28 (calorific value) x 0.93 (correction factor)
= 85,465.28 kWh
New meter reading:
9,876 (m3) x 11.28 (calorific value) x 0.93 (correction factor)
= 103,603.19 kWh
Difference:
103,603.19 kWh – 85,465.28 kWh
= 18,137.91 kWh
Hence, the consumption for the specific accounting period is: 18,137.91 kWh.

It is not the volume (m³), but the calorific value measured in kilowatt hours (kWh) that is relevant for the consumption of energy. The meter measures your natural gas consumption in m³. A physical conversion factor (calorific value x correction factor) is used to convert your consumption into kilowatt hours. The following formula applies: m³ x calorific value x correction factor = kWh
The calorific value and the correction factor are needed to calculate the gas consumption in kWh. You can find both values on your gas bill.

Depending on the additive, gas often has a putrid or strongly chemical smell (similar to glue). Should you smell gas, do NOT panic! Do not actuate any electrical switches, such as doorbells or the phone, and do not create any sparks. Open the windows and close the gas tap. Notify your neighbours (knock, do not ring the doorbell!).
